The Galápagos Islands Are Still Growing

While most ancient archipelagos slowly erode into the ocean over millions of years, parts of the Galápagos are actively expanding. The Galápagos Islands are still growing, constantly reshaped by powerful subterranean forces.

Understanding the geological engine driving this creation helps reveal how new land forms and why unique wildlife continues to evolve in real time.

The Galapagos Hotspot: An Ocean Floor Engine

The continuous growth of the Galápagos Archipelago comes down to one primary geological mechanism: a volcanic hotspot.

Deep beneath the Earth’s crust lies a plume of intense heat known as the Galápagos Hotspot. Situated beneath the Nazca Tectonic Plate, this stationary heat source continuously melts the rock above it, forcing magma to erupt through the ocean floor.

  • Underwater eruptions build up layers of cooled basaltic lava.

  • The accumulated rock eventually breaches the ocean surface to form a brand-new island.

  • As the Nazca Plate moves eastward at roughly 5 centimeters per year, it carries older islands away from the hotspot while new ones form above it.

Fernandina and Isabela: The Growing Western Frontier

The archipelago is not growing uniformly everywhere. While eastern islands like San Cristóbal and Española are slowly eroding, the western islands of Fernandina and Isabela are expanding rapidly.

Eruptions from giant shield volcanoes—such as Wolf Volcano (which erupted in 2022) and La Cumbre—send fresh lava flows spilling down to the coast. When this incandescent lava meets the Pacific Ocean, it instantly cools, adding new hectares of solid basalt to the shoreline.

2. Tectonic Uplift Events

Volcanic eruptions aren’t the only way land expands. Subterranean magma pressure can physically push the ocean floor upward before an eruption even occurs. In 1954, a sudden uplift at Urania Bay on Isabela Island raised a section of the seabed by over 4 meters (13 feet) in a matter of days, instantly expanding the island’s coastline and leaving marine life stranded on new dry land.

How Geology Drives Evolution

This ongoing geological expansion directly impacts the archipelago’s famous biodiversity. Freshly formed lava fields create harsh, barren landscapes that pioneer species must adapt to conquer.

The Galápagos Islands aren’t a static monument to natural history—they are an evolving, expanding archipelago. As long as the hotspot below burns bright, the story of these islands remains unfinished.
